The Bosun, or Boatswain, is a senior deck rating responsible for supervising the deck crew and ensuring maintenance and seamanship tasks are carried out efficiently. Acting as the link between officers and ratings, the Bosun organizes daily work schedules, oversees mooring and anchoring operations, and ensures that safety procedures are strictly followed. This position requires a deep knowledge of shipboard equipment, ropes, rigging, and cargo handling. A Bosun is also responsible for mentoring junior seafarers and coordinating with officers on deck operations. Strong leadership, communication, and technical skills are essential, as the Bosun plays a key role in maintaining the ship’s operational readiness.
