Third Officer Sea Jobs

The Third Officer, also known as the Third Mate, is a junior deck officer primarily responsible for safety equipment, lifesaving appliances, and watchkeeping duties. Their tasks include standing navigational watches, maintaining safety gear, conducting inspections, and assisting in cargo operations. The Third Officer also participates in emergency drills and ensures that all safety protocols are observed. This position requires a strong foundation in navigation, seamanship, and international regulations. For many seafarers, the Third Officer role is the first licensed officer position, providing valuable experience and a pathway to advancing to Second Officer and beyond.
