Second Officer Sea Jobs

The Second Officer, also known as the Navigation Officer, is a licensed deck officer responsible for maintaining the ship’s charts, publications, and navigational equipment. This officer takes charge of voyage planning, passage monitoring, and often handles safety and firefighting equipment inspections. On watch, the Second Officer manages safe navigation, collision avoidance, and communication with other vessels. In addition, they may act as the ship’s medical officer or assist with cargo planning, depending on the type of vessel. Strong attention to detail, knowledge of international maritime conventions, and proficiency in modern navigation systems are essential for success in this role. Many seafarers view the Second Officer position as a stepping stone to higher ranks, such as Chief Officer and eventually Master.
